Medieval society: a bit of heaven on earth

Altar Santo André

"Everything in medieval society helped the faithful long for heaven -- the architecture, the arts and the general ambiance.

"These objects helped to elevate souls and enabled people to touch heaven to some degree.
“The Church habitually presented Herself with the aspect of heaven on earth in order that men, after having analyzed and studied Her, would feel invited to enter a sort of heaven of the soul on this earth.
“Everything medieval is permeated with this spirit.  It was the tonic cord of the middle ages.  It produced a society that, even in its temporal aspects, gave people a bit of heaven on earth.

Fra Angélico
“Thus, the arch, the stained glass window, the castle's towers, the battles, the knight's amour, etc., all of them caused in souls a heavenly impression."
