Terri’s death, Seven Years Ago

by Steve Jalsevac

Today Fr. Frank Pavone remembers Terri Schiavo’s death on March 30, 2005. I remember it very well. It is agonizing to recall and impossible to forget. It was possibly the darkest time of my over 30 years involvement in pro-life issues.

The entire pro-life movement was unable to save the life (they really tried) of a helpless woman who was being slowly murdered by starvation and dehydration with the cooperation to varying degrees of the legal and medical establishments, the police (they even had snipers on the rooftop of her residence to stop those who might try to rescue her), many religious leaders, including her frighteningly callous local Florida bishop, theologians, ethicists and the media.

It was barbaric, and I always feared that America would eventually pay a heavy price for that painful, slow, very public execution of an angelic innocent. Maybe that is one reason why it has been given Obama - who many Christians actually voted for.
