Editor of St. Mary’s student newspaper: college ‘Catholic in name only’

by Christine Dhanagom

May 5, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The editor-in-chief of the student newspaper at St. Mary’s College in California lambasted the school for infidelity to its Catholic identity in an editorial published Tuesday.

“Our identity as a Catholic college is in name only,” wrote Michael Bruer, in an article titled “My years at Saint Mary’s College” that appeared in the College’s official student newspaper, the Collegian.

St. Mary’s has come under fire in the past for bringing the sexually-explicit play the Vagina Monologues to campus, and for hosting controversial speakers.

Jack O’Connell, California’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, who is known for his outspoken views in favor of abortion and homosexual “marriage,” spoke at the college’s commencement ceremony last May, and former domestic terrorist Bill Ayers delivered a lecture at the school in 2009.

In his editorial, Bruer cited Ayers’ appearance on campus, as well as those of feminist activist Gloria Stienem and pro-abortion politician Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.

He also said that the Women’s Resource Center is “rumored to be sending young women to Planned Parenthood,” and called the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance “a breeding ground for anti-Catholic sentiment.”

“The fact of the matter is, the administration of this school refuses to acknowledge their obscene bias, and more and more the most outcast members of the school are the Catholic students, professors, and faculty,” Bruer wrote. “What does it say about a college when the alumni donations to the school come from less than 20 percent of the alumni?”

“The change necessary on our campus would have to be comprehensive and not just come from students. Ultimately I do believe that our college can manage to resemble a true Catholic University in time, but until then, I refuse to endorse this school when it continues to provide such blatantly anti-Catholic programming, speakers, and organizations to the community,” he concluded.
