SEATTLE, Washington, Tue Apr 12, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Seattle University, a Catholic, Jesuit-run university in Seattle, Washington, is still promoting student internships at Planned Parenthood on their website, despite 20,927 complaints having been directed to the school, according to the pro-life organization TFP Student Action.
TFP Student Action began a protest petition in February urging Seattle University President Fr. Stephen Sundborg to remove Planned Parenthood and all other pro-abortion groups from the university’s website, and to stop promoting internships to the nation’s largest abortion provider.
According to the University’s website, public affairs majors are required to participate in an internship with a public or nonprofit organization to fulfill degree requirements. The website provides a list of 29 such organizations with whom public affairs students can intern, among them Planned Parenthood of Western Washington.
A press release from TFP Student Action states that despite the large number of complaints, Planned Parenthood is still listed on the university’s website and the pro-abortion links remain up and running. Abortion advocacy groups currently listed under “get involved” include: Feminist Majority Foundation, Legal Momentum, National Organization for Women (NOW), and National Organization for Women, Seattle Chapter.
“We will continue this protest until Planned Parenthood and all the pro-abortion links are gone,” said TFP Student Action Director John Ritchie. “The average webmaster could remove those links in about five minutes or less. One cannot be a true Catholic and support abortion. It’s contradictory.”
“Boston College, Rosemont College and the University of Detroit Mercy [all Catholic] removed links to pro-abortion groups on their web sites,” continued Ritchie. “Yet, Seattle has not done so, giving scandal to students who are faithful to Catholic teaching on abortion.”
Ritchie noted that a group of 16 national pro-life leaders, led by The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) and Students for Life of America (SFLA), have sent a letter to the president of Seattle University calling on him to put an end to the institution’s connections to Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations.
Among the groups that signed on to the letter were Priests for Life, Human Life International, Susan B. Anthony List, Concerned Women for America, Live Action, Human Life Alliance, Catholics United for the Faith, Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, and Culture of Life Foundation.
