Largest Catholic University to Host Pro-Partial Birth Abortion Judge: Pro-Lifers Protest

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer is more than vaguely "pro-choice."  He penned the majority opinion in the Stenberg v Carhart decision in 2000, striking down state laws banning partial-birth abortion.  In fact, the abortion procedure he supported is so barbaric that the United States Congress called for its outright prohibition in 2003:

"A moral, medical, and ethical consensus exists that the practice of performing a partial-birth abortion.... (usually the puncturing of the back of the child’s skull and removing the baby’s brains) is a gruesome and inhumane procedure that is never medically necessary and should be prohibited.”

As a registered nurse, Brenda Pratt Shafer witnessed partial-birth abortions while working for an abortionist in Ohio. This is how she described one of these abortions in a letter to Congressman Tony Hall:

"The baby's body was moving. His little fingers were clasping together. He was kicking his feet. All the while his little head was still stuck inside. Dr. Haskell took a pair of
scissors and inserted them into the back of the baby's head. Then he opened the scissors up. Then he stuck the high-powered suction tube into the hole and sucked the baby's brains out. "

However, DePaul University's College of Law in Chicago —the largest Catholic university in America— has invited Justice Breyer to deliver a special address at its 20th Annual Clifford Symposium on April 24 and 25.  According to DePaul's online announcement, the event will explore "what it means to be a judge and to seek justice in America’s courts."
Well, what about the Fifth Commandment?  What about DePaul's Catholic identity?  And what about the grave injustice of procured abortion?

What about the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' clear statement that "Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

Predictably, NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation gives Justice Breyer flying colors for his "history of support for reproductive freedom."  The group highlights multiple cases in which Justice Breyer ruled in favor of pro-abortion policies.  NARAL also published a list of pro-abortion quotes by Justice Breyer on its web site.

How can a judge with such a pro-abortion record be invited to give not only a lecture, but a prominent address, at a Catholic university, which ought to be a cornerstone in the defense of innocent life?

Take action: Everyone who supports the God-given right to life should sign this respectful and peaceful protest to DePaul University.

"Your signed petition to stop this scandal will be presented to officials of DePaul University," said TFP Student Action director John Ritchie.  "Our goal is to collect 20,000 petitions by January 22, before the 41st anniversary of Roe v Wade."

"Let's work to make procured abortion unthinkable," he said, "starting with Catholic campuses. No compromise is possible with the sin of abortion.  Let's replace the culture of death, with a culture of purity."

Why is Catholic DePaul University hosting Justice Stephen Breyer who ruled in favor of the sin of partial birth abortion?  Please rescind the invitation as soon as possible. Abortion is a grave injustice.

I'm deeply concerned.  Why is DePaul University undermining its Catholic identity by inviting pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to speak on campus?  Justice Breyer even ruled in favor of partial-birth abortion, a barbaric procedure.  It's time to ask DePaul University to rescind this invitation and defend the right to life.
