The spire atop Mont St. Michael,[1] designed and added by Viollet-le-Duc in 1897, is the most beautiful aspect of that edifice.
But it already existed as a possibility in the minds of pilgrims and visitors who went there before Viollet-le-Duc[2] had it built.
The abbey was ruled by that possibility even before it actually came into existence.
See this painting of the abbey before it has a spire. And see then how incomplete the abbey was.
So, also, in our lives. When we do not strive to reach the spire of our own holiness and heroism, there is something sadly lacking in our souls.
