- Sometimes people have questioned how effective incremental pro-life legislation really is. It’s true that the relation between laws passed and lives saved can seem distant from each other. Years can pass before things really change. However, the moving plans of infamous, late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart prove laws can make a difference.
Dr. Carhart has been performing abortions full-time in Nebraska for nearly two decades, becoming well-known as the lead plaintiff against the Nebraska partial-birth abortion ban which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2000. He returned to the Court in 2007 to fight the federal PBA ban, this time to see the ban upheld as constitutional.
After the death of late-term abortionist George Tiller in Kansas, Carhart reportedly considered opening new abortion centers elsewhere. Now, according to KETV in Iowa, Carhart is going to open three new facilities in other states – Indiana, Iowa, and Maryland. In the KETV interview, he admits that his reason for leaving Nebraska is because that state’s laws have become so pro-life. In fact, before this current year’s legislative session, Nebraska was 9th on the AUL ranking.
Carhart’s move gives us a great reason to push legislators to pass new pro-life laws. They can make a difference. And after all, no state wants to become the new late-term abortion headquarters for the country.
